Artist Statement
I initially felt perturbed about what direction I wanted to go with this project, as abstract art is admittedly foreign to me. Fortuitously, a recent acquisition of a Royal typewriter showed that the uniformity of the keys and the ambiguity of its origin intrigued me immensely. The process of creating black paper compositions was challenging as I tried to recreate the ideas I had envisioned over a series of sporadic sketches. There were still some uncertainties in my designs, so I opted out of some of the minor details as the process of my final project continued to take shape. During class critique, peers thoughtfully observed that my massed outlines resembled maps. Considering my own personal interest in globes, this was an exciting concept. As a result, I managed to incorporate the mechanical homogeneity of a typewriter alongside the timelessness of maps. I was able to pull various ideas and forms of designs from the complete amalgamation of elements from our process work, with a few designs that I had originally considered to be weak. Nonetheless, I was able to integrate ideas from the collections into my final work. After outlining and tracing with graphite and micron pens the final composition, Perennial, was completed. In comparison to my other creative processes, I would admit that this project was the most organized. I often simply find features that entice me and sit down and draw them as I see them, rather than go through the motions of careful planning and preparation. I genuinely feel that this piece holds a lot of representational value. Typewriters and paper maps may be out of style, but their functionalities and efficiencies remain the same. Forever timeless and impactful.

My Royal typewriter, this particular design made around the late 1920s and early 1930s. Still fully functional!

One of my globes. This one is particularly unique. Found at a Goodwill in Greenville, NC back in 2023.
